Neeraj Chopra is the oldest of three children born to Satish Kumar, a farmer, and Saroj Devi, a housewife. He was born in Khandra village in the district of Panipat in the state of Haryana. He grew up with 19 people in his family, including three uncles. Chopra’s family feared that he was too heavy when he was a teenager and told him to join a gym in Panipat to work out regularly. Once Chopra was done with his workouts, he would go to the nearby Shivaji Stadium and watch other kids his age throw clubs. Chopra was naturally good at the sport and made friends with other players on the track.

People in Chopra’s town didn’t know much about javelin, but when his family heard about it, they encouraged him to try it. His first year of training was at Shivaji Stadium. Then he went to the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula, Haryana, to work with coach Naseem Ahmad.
