Early Life and Education
Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi’s first child, Rahul Gandhi, was born in New Delhi, India on June 19, 1970. His mother became the head of the Indian National Congress, while his father became India’s sixth prime minister. Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation’s first prime minister, was Gandhi’s great-grandfather, and his paternal grandmother was Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Gandhi received his early education at the Doon School in Dehradun after attending St. Columba’s School in Delhi. After his grandmother was killed by Sikh radicals in 1984, he and his sister Priyanka were homeschooled because of safety concerns.
Gandhi pursued his further studies at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, before moving to Harvard University in the United States. In order to avoid being discovered, Gandhi went under the identity Raul Vinci to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, following the murder of his father by the Tamil Tigers in 1991 and in the face of fresh security risks. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Rollins in 1994, he went on to Trinity College, University of Cambridge, to earn a master’s degree in philosophy in 1995.
Rahul Gandhi’s Career
Gandhi was working in the London, England-based management consulting company Monitor Group prior to entering politics. He worked for the company for three years before leaving to start his own technology consulting business in Mumbai.
Early in 2004, Gandhi declared his intention to run in the 14th general elections from the Uttar Pradesh constituency of Amethi, which had previously belonged to his father. He applied for a position in the Indian Parliament’s lower house, the Lok Sabha. Eight years later, the Congress Party finally made a comeback in the general election of 2004. Gandhi joined both the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Standing Committee on Home Affairs. He was named chair of the National Students’ Union of India and the Indian Youth Congress in 2007, in addition to serving as general secretary of the Indian National Congress.
In the 2009 and 2014 elections, Gandhi kept his Amethi seat. Onwards, he presided over the Indian National Congress from 2017 to 2019. Following his resignation from that position, Gandhi’s mother took over as the member for Wayanad, Kerala in the Lok Sabha. He was, however, removed from the Lok Sabha at the beginning of 2023 after being found guilty and given a two-year prison sentence for uttering disparaging remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and supposedly the entire “Modi community.” The Supreme Court of India halted Gandhi’s conviction that summer while an appeal was filed.
