Early Life
Sylvester Stallone was born Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone on July 6, 1946, in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. He is the oldest son of Italian-born hairdresser Francesco “Frank” Stallone Sr and astrologer and dancer Jackie Stallone. His younger brother, Frank Stallone, is an actor and musician. Sylvester’s bottom left side of his face was paralyzed due to complications during birthing, giving him his now-iconic “snarling” expression and slightly slurred speech.
Stallone spent some of his childhood in foster care because of his parents’ tumultuous relationship. The pair eventually divorced. Sylvester lived with his father in Maryland after his parents divorced.
Stallone studied drama at the American College in Switzerland before going to the University of Miami. He dropped out of school before finishing his degree and relocated to New York City to pursue acting as a profession.
Career
Stallone’s first starring role came in “The Party at Kitty and Stud’s,” a softcore pornographic film. Stallone later revealed that he made the film out of desperation after being evicted from his flat. He was paid $200 for two days’ work.
His first few film jobs were tiny, including an uncredited appearance in Woody Allen’s 1971 comedy “Bananas.” In 1973, he appeared in the film “Rebel,” and in 1974, he received some early critical acclaim for his performance in “The Lords of Flatbush.”
In the mid-1970s, Stallone chose to relocate to Los Angeles. In his free time, he wrote screenplays. He wrote a script about a struggling underdog gangster with dreams of becoming a professional boxer after being inspired by a Muhammad Ali against Chuck Wepner fight he had attended. Stallone reportedly refused to sell the script unless he starred in the film. He held out until he met Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, two producers who agreed to let him play Rocky Balboa. The name “Balboa” came to him since his Los Angeles residence was located two blocks from Balboa Avenue.
In 1976, “Rocky” was released. Despite some lackluster test screenings, the film went on to become a global phenomenon, propelling Stallone to instant A-list status and international celebrity. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $117 million off a $1 million budget; it received 10 Academy Award nominations. It competed for Best Picture against now-classic films such as “All the President’s Men,” “Network,” and “Taxi Driver,” but “Rocky” unexpectedly won. It also won prizes for Best Direction and Best Film Editing. “Rocky II” was released in 1979, followed by two more in the 1980s, and Stallone continued to have box office success.
In 1982, Sylvester starred as John Rambo in the action film “Rambo: First Blood,” which was a critical and commercial success. Following the release of the original film, three sequels were produced. In preparation for both of his roles as Rocky and Rambo, he followed an extremely rigorous training regimen, including two exercises per day, six days a week, and additional activity in the evening. He lowered his body fat percentage to an all-time low of 2.8% for the third “Rocky” film.
Stallone’s fame began to decrease in 1987 when he was featured in “Over the Top,” a box office bomb that received terrible reviews from reviewers. In the 1990s, he released “Rocky V,” which was another box-office flop. He attempted to make comedy films but was greeted with critical and commercial failures in the form of the early-nineties comedies “Oscar” and “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.” Stallone had a temporary career boost with “Cliffhanger” in 1993, which grossed $170 million, and “Daylight” in 1996, but by the early 2000s, he had appeared in a run of box office flops and critical letdowns.
After a three-year break, Stallone returned in 2006 with the sixth “Rocky” film. He created, directed, and starred in the highly acclaimed film “Rocky Balboa,” which had a $24 million budget and grossed $155.7 million worldwide. He also reprised his role as Rambo in the fourth edition of the series, “Rambo.” In 2010, he wrote, directed, and starred in the hit film “The Expendables,” which debuted at number one at the box office. A sequel was published in 2012 to similar positive reviews and a #1 box office debut.
Stallone added another chapter to the “Rocky” franchise in 2015 with the spin-off film “Creed.” Ryan Coogler directed the film, which centered on Adonis Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan, the son of Rocky’s opponent Apollo Creed. Stallone got considerable appreciation and a third Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. “Creed II,” which was released in 2018, likewise received great reviews and grossed $35.3 million on its first weekend. The fifth “Rambo” film opened on September 20, 2019, and grossed $91 million worldwide.
Stallone has also played Stakar Ogord in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and Dwight “The General” Manfredi in the Paramount+ series “Tulsa King”. In 2023, Sylvester, his wife, and their three daughters participated in the reality show “The Family Stallone,” which was swiftly renewed for a second season.
