Early Life

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York. His father and namesake were electrical engineers, and his mother was a special education teacher. Tom has three sisters. His first cousin, William Mapother, would subsequently become an actor and has acted alongside Tom in several projects.

Tom Cruise spent his early years bouncing around the country, including a brief period in Canada after his father was hired by the Canadian Armed Forces. Tom later claimed that his father was a bully who had beaten him and his brothers. He attended 15 different schools during the course of 14 years.

Tom had not always wanted to be an actor. He took theatrical classes in middle school, but he was more of a jock. He switched to acting in high school after a knee injury caused him to leave the wrestling team. Cruise devoted himself to the drama club and rapidly rose to the lead in their performance of Guys and Dolls.

Despite receiving excellent evaluations and praise for his acting abilities, Tom remained uninterested. He actually attended the St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati, wanting to become a Franciscan priest. He was booted from seminary for drinking.

Tom attended Glen Ridge High School in New Jersey and graduated in 1980.

Career

After graduating from high school, Cruise relocated to New York City to pursue a career in acting. He quickly moved to Los Angeles to audition for television parts.

Tom made his cinematic debut in 1981, playing a small role in “Endless Love.” That same year, he received critical acclaim for his performance in “Taps.” Tom was also signed by the powerful talent agency CAA as a result of his work in that job. A CAA agent called Paula Wagner presented Tom’s case straight to the agency’s managing partner, Michael Ovitz. Tom became a longtime CAA client, and in the early 1990s, he and Paula founded Cruise/Wagner Productions.

Tom received additional acclaim with “The Outsiders.”

Tom made a name for himself in 1983 with his performance in the comedy/drama “Risky Business.” Risky Business grossed $64 million on a $6 million budget and produced a lot of cultural touchstones. The film established Cruise as an up-and-coming star, earning him his first Golden Globe nomination.

Tom Cruise became one of the world’s most recognizable performers after the phenomenal success of 1986’s “Top Gun.” Top Gun grossed $360 million worldwide and was the year’s highest-grossing film.

That same year, he co-starred with Paul Newman in “The Color of Money.”

The hits kept coming with “Cocktail” and “Rainman,” both released in 1988. Rain Man earned four Academy Awards. Cruise’s first Oscar nomination came a year later, for “Born on the Fourth of July.”

He went on to release “Days of Thunder” in 1990, “Far and Away” in 1992, “A Few Good Men” in 1993, “The Firm” in 1994, and “Interview with the Vampire.” A Few Good Men earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
